Iona Village Hall is at the very heart of life on this tiny, yet thriving island. The Hall is a vital, shared space for islanders and visitors of all ages. It is our cinema, sports stadium, debating chamber, play area and gathering place.

Our Vision as Hall Trustees, is to maintain and nurture a warm, welcoming, modern community hub; a place where islanders, seasonal workers and visitors alike can feel like they belong.

Community events over the initial year post-construction provided some of the first opportunities for socialising in over a year because of the COVID restrictions, including ‘whole community’ events such as Bonfire Night or Christmas Craft fair and group activities such as Playgroup and Ladies’ Group which support and involve some of those most at risk of feeling isolated. This has helped restore personal connections and intergenerational relationships which underpin our shared knowledge of our community.

Islanders have familiarised themselves with the new building, and learned the new systems for booking and using the spaces. A large proportion of the community have developed new skills and knowledge around use of equipment (including complex sound & light equipment) and looking after the building. Our volunteers, group leaders, businesses and other organisations, have a strong sense of shared responsibility for the building and the activities that are delivered.

As COVID limitations receded, we saw the building being used increasingly for informal, spontaneous activities such as Table Tennis, children’s dodgeball and social events. Re-establishing the regular physical activity groups has been important to the community, along with the new opportunities such as pilates, particularly as the island has no alternative dedicated sports facilities, indoor or outdoor.

Community events over the previous year provided some of the first opportunities for socialising in over a year, including ‘whole community’ events such as Bonfire Night or Christmas Craft fair and specific group activities such as Playgroup and Ladies’ Group which support and involve some of those most at risk of feeling isolated. This has helped restore personal connections and intergenerational relationships which underpin our shared knowledge of our community, our needs and those most vulnerable.

Islanders have familiarised themselves with the new building, and learned the new systems for booking and using the spaces. A large proportion of the community have developed new skills and knowledge around use of equipment (including complex sound & light equipment) and looking after the building. Our volunteers, group leaders, businesses and other organisations, feel a strong sense of shared responsibility for the building and the activities that are delivered.

As COVID limitations recede, we are already seeing the building being used increasingly for informal, spontaneous activities such as Table Tennis, children’s dodgeball and social events. Re-establishing the regular physical activity groups has been significant, along with the new opportunities such as pilates, particularly as the island has no alternative dedicated sports facilities, indoor or outdoor.

We lean heavily on the goodwill, time and support of island volunteers, partners and trustees, supported by our Hall Development Manager, to maintain and nurture our community building. This includes tasks such as:

  • Managing the final stages snagging and funding and finance elements
  • Continued to furnish and equip the spaces in response to consultation
  • Supported local community groups and individuals to encourage wider, varied use of the spaces
  • Creating or updating policies and procedures for the operating of the new building
  • Developed a Handbook for the new building and the equipment so that hall users can feel ownership and confidence in using their community spaces and facilities
  • Hosted and supporting community events including Bonfire Night, Christmas Craft Fair, Film Nights and Golf Disco
  • Developing an online ‘back-of-house’ booking system and facilitating contactless entry system
  • Installing a defibrillator as part of a wider local scheme
